Pooch'd - Story Overview

Scoots (main character) wakes up from his afternoon nap, stretches, strolls over to his water dish and takes a short drink. He then leaps up onto his dog house to scout out the neighborhood.

He looks around and sees an alluring fire hydrant across the street. On the other side of the road, however, another dog, Brutus, has also spotted it. After taking notice of each other and exchanging glares, both dogs scramble to get out of their yards and mark the hydrant. Scoots shoots through a fence board and is poised and searching for the hydrant. Brutus, after already peeing on the it, looks over at Scoots and gives a sly snicker.

Momentarily miffed, Scoots spots another hydrant down the street and bolts off past Brutus to mark it first. While marking the hydrant, Scoots snickers back at Brutus, but notices that Brutus’s gaze is fixed on something in the distance. He turns and spots a shiny new hydrant, complete with wet paint sign, radiating in the sun across the intersection. Both dogs are in shock and awe as they drool over the freshly painted hydrant.

With a quick glance at each other, a dramatic race ensues as they bolt off towards it. Just before they reach their prize, they are met with an abrupt collision with a speeding city bus.

Battered and bruised, Scoots and Brutus sit in their casts and neck cones grumbling about their misfortune. Suddenly, the sound of a vehicle is heard in the distance. A mail truck pulls up to nearby neighbor’s house and a mailman steps out and proceeds to walk down towards the neighbor’s door. Desperate and quite immobile, the dogs try to scoot their misshapen selves toward their newly found target.
